[ Struggling with a Sewing Machine ]
Actually, my first time to the Makola Market
( Accra's largest market ) had stopped by a fabric store.
The many colorful African fabrics attracted my attention.
With the fabric we bought there,
we went to a sewing factory owned by my friends.
I wanted to learn how to make a drawstring bag.
It was my first time using a sewing machine since
my elementary school home economics class.
I tried my hand at a foot-pedal operated type.
Rolenta, the factory's most popular mood maker, was my teacher.
She took my hand and taught me carefully,
but I stepped on the machine too vigorously,
so the thread went this way and that . . .
Yes. As you can imagine, I have no sense for such tasks.
But thanks to Ms. Rolenta's praise and encouragement ( see video ) ,
I managed to complete my handmade purse.
