September 2023.
The "Akosombo Dam" which forms Lake Volta reaches a dangerous level,
forcing a planned water release to avoid breaching the dam.
The cause of the flooding was an
exceptional amount of precipitation brought about by climate change.
The flood damage caused by this emergency water release is estimated to
have affected as many as 30,000 people.
For example, fields in the surrounding area have been inundated and
severely affected.
One field was originally planted with cassava, cabbage, tomatoes, okra,
cucumbers, onions,
and other common vegetables grown in Ghana,
but the flooding changed the soil and made it difficult to grow leafy vegetables.
For now, thanks to the efforts of everyone working together,
the region has returned to an environment where at
least relatively easy-to-grow vegetables such as cassava,
tomatoes, and okra can be grown without problems.
Heavy rains have occured in Japan in recent years too.
These are the same effects of global climate change which have been felt in Ghana.
And I did not know.
Incidentally, the people living in the surrounding area use Lake Volta to
supply all the water they need for their daily lives.
It is used as drinking water, cooking water, and body washing water.
There is no "tap water" in this area, so this is where they get everything they need.
I have realized something about this "water"
by learning about the actual situation in urban areas.
I was going to write about it in my next entry,
but if I keep getting sidetracked we'll never get to the school,
so I'll leave that for another time.
First of all, we are going to go to the school.
Yes, let's go to school.
