[ Let's Go to School - The Power of a School Lunch ]
We had just moved to the place where the teachers and
local village heads gather together.
Far behind me, children are excited under the mango trees.
After exchanging greetings,
our host placed a bright cloth over my shoulders.
This is a traditional Ghanaian weaving called "kente."
It is Ghanaian custom to give it as a gift or wear it when celebrating or
welcoming someone.
Sakurai, you have been given a great welcome even though you've not done anything.
I am dreading this from the bottom of my heart.
( From the picture, I looks so happy, though. )
Then the time came for the student's daily school lunch.
I joined the teachers to help serve the food.
I could see from the expressions on the children's faces that they were all looking forward to the meal.
The menu for the day was
*Kenkey
*Tomato stew
*Small fried fish
*Local vegetables
Ke ... n ... key?
I had never heard of this food before.
It is made by steaming fermented corn and cassava dough,
wrapped in corn leaves.
It is a dish characterized by its uniquely sour texture and flavor,
and is one of Ghana's national dishes.
Yay! My first time eating this food!
I'm so curious!
Now, the actual food!
First of all, my fingers are hot!
( nomnomnom )
Oh! Sour!? It's very sour!
A bit more impactful than the banku we had before!
When you dip it in the tomato stew,
you can really taste its unique flavor through the sourness.
We didn't dare check if it was supposed to be swallowed like the banku,
so we chewed it thoroughly.
( Sakurai feared that if he checked, he would have to swallow it whole. )
The children were enjoying eating this school lunch.
When I asked my colleagues about it,
I learned of its great significance.
School lunches are very effective in raising the school attendance rate.
In rural areas, there are many families who can only afford to
feed themselves one meal a day.
So free school lunches play a very important role in encouraging them to
seek an education.
When their school first opened,
the school attendance rate was only about 65%,
but once school lunches started, the rate rose to 95%.
Some go to school because they can eat school lunch,
and some go to school to get school lunch so that they can take it home
and eat it with their families.
The reasons for going to school vary, but there is no doubt
that school lunch is one of the reasons for children to attend school.
This is the power of free school lunches.
